Is there such a thing as too much pressure, or should I take as much as I can stand?

Yes. A therapeutic massage can at times be intense, but, it should never be painful. A painful massage is counterproductive.

What should I do if I get ticklish during a massage?

Communicate with your therapist. The therapist will adjust their touch/technique to help diminish the sensation.

How will massage therapy benefit me?

Professional massage therapy can help relieve muscular tension and pain, increase range of motion, and reduce mental stress. Massage is a natural healing process that provides both physical and emotional benefits.

Why do I occasionally get headaches after a massage?

Massage, while uncommon, has an effect on vascular circulation, which for some people may cause a headache. Furthermore, being face down in the face rest may cause excessive pressure on the sinus cavity, resulting in a headache. When you experience excessive congestion, which is quite common, turn your head to the side to aid breathing. Inform your therapist if your face rest is uncomfortable because it is angled too low or too high.

Privacy

Before your massage, you will be asked to remove as much clothing as you feel comfortable with. The massage therapist will leave the room while you are undressed. Take off only what you can comfortably remove. Lie on the massage table, under the provided sheet or towel, which will cover your entire body except for the area being massaged.

What to Expect During Your Massage Session

Mutual respect, courtesy, professionalism, confidentiality, and dignity among you and the massage therapist. Being draped appropriately by a sheet, towel, or blanket, leaving only the area being massaged exposed. A licensed, registered, or certified massage therapist who operates within their scope of practice and ethical standards. Expect them to be members of a professional organization with a code of ethics. A health intake conversation about your medical conditions and what you expect from the massage. The right and option to ask the massage therapist questions and receive professional responses. The right to decide whether there will be conversation, music, or silence during the massage.

I’ve never received a massage before. Should I plan one before my golf tournament next week?

Yes. However, it is critical that you inform your therapist that you have never had a session before and do not want to receive an overly intense massage. Schedule the massage three days before the tournament, requesting moderate pressure, nothing specific, full body, and some stretching. And communicate! Do not allow them to get too deep or intense. Make sure you schedule your post-tournament massage one or two days after.
